Our Dental Nurse Hero for May is….

Introducing May’s Dental Nurse Hero, Shelby North from {my}dentist Avondale. Shelby was nominated for her extraordinary patient care, going above and beyond and being an all-round hero to the Avondale team.

Shelby, who began her dental nursing career at just 17 when a family friend working in the Avondale practice recommended her for a Trainee Dental Nurse position. She has now been a dental nurse for 10 years!

Her nomination states: “Shelby isn’t just a dental nurse hero, she is an all-round hero! Throughout COVID-19 Shelby has gone above and beyond for her patients and colleagues. She is always the first person to get to work and the last to leave.

“I have never worked with a more caring, dedicated and hardworking nurse in the time I have been a dentist and she is a credit to the practice, the company and the entire profession.”

Shelby’s nomination also described how during lockdown, she would call elderly patients whose appointments had been cancelled to ensure they were doing well and let them know they hadn’t been forgotten about.

Not only is Shelby the Head Nurse, she is also the go-to first aider, running simulation drills to keep the practice team up to date and stepping in to assist with medical emergencies. This once involved sitting with a patient in distress for over an hour keeping them calm and providing vital first aid treatments while awaiting paramedic arrival, even calling the very grateful patient later that evening to check in.

Shelby describes her biggest achievements as being selected as the brand ambassador for the ‘Patients First’ initiative and nominated for the Dental Nurse of the Year award!

“I don’t think I can actually put into words how surprised and happy it makes me. I’m just grateful that the hard work doesn’t go unnoticed because I really do try to uplift everyone around me and try my best to be fair to my fellow nurses. It can be quite challenging being Head Nurse of a 10-surgery practice sometimes but ultimately, I feel blessed to have the nurses that I have, they all work their socks off!”

“10 years ago, I knew absolutely nothing about dental nursing, cross infection, professionalism, first aid, confidentiality or anything dentistry related at all! All I knew was: one way or another I will make a success out of this! I fell in love with my job and I’m still in love with it to this day!”

We asked Shelby for her top tips for all you Student Dental Nurses to help you on your path to a new and exciting career!

  • The number one rule of dental nursing: always be one step ahead of the Dentist!
  • You get out what you put in.
  • Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help.
  • Use, learn and absorb all the knowledge from your work colleagues, they have all been where you are now.
  • You will learn something every day.
  • If you ever get stuck, just think: What would Beyoncé‎ do?

We are so proud of Shelby and incredibly grateful for her hard work. We love seeing your success and happiness! Congratulations on being one of our #DentalNurseHeroes and thank you for all that you do.
